CHAPTER 40

SQUEEZING

‘It’s fucking simple, you fucking cretins,’ Dylan hissed on the other side of the door. ‘She ain’t getting outta here alive until we get our money. A hundred grand. In tens.’

The last image Erica had of him, before she’d closed the front door, was of him holding the knife against Naomi’s neck, standing in front of her mobile phone, which had been propped onto a makeshift stand.

They were livestreaming the horrid event on Erica’s Facebook page, where all her friends and family – and hopefully the world’s media – would be watching. Naomi was almost comatose, thanks to a combination of ecstasy they’d forced into her bloodstream from Dylan’s secret stash followed by a punch to the head as soon as they’d realised the drugs were having the opposite effect – they needed her unconscious rather than bouncing off the walls. Meanwhile, Erica was under strict instructions to stay outside the flat and stand guard. It was too risky for her to be in the same space as him, just in case she came into shot or spoilt the façade they’d created.

Erica stopped pacing. Something in the distance had caught her eye. A black car pulled in and parked up outside the estate. And then another. Holy shit. Reality sank in. They’d arrived. But now she and Dylan had a lifeline; they were staying in one of the low-rises that looked out onto the estate, and she estimated they had a lifeline of a few minutes. The police wouldn’t find them immediately, but it wouldn’t be long until they did.

Erica spun on the spot, and as she placed her hand on the door handle, a figure appeared out the corner of her eye.

‘Excuse me?’ the figure asked, moving closer.

Erica tried to move, but couldn’t. Her hand was frozen to the handle.

‘I was wondering if you might be able to help me?’

Erica slowly tilted her head. Before she could get a clear look at the person’s face, they lunged at her.

The person’s arms wrapped around her body. In their hand, they held a piece of cloth and smothered it over her mouth. Erica gasped and clawed at the cloth and arm,
